Worship Services

Minimize

Religious services at Congregation Achduth Vesholom reflect the warmth of our membership. Many visitors comment on the sense of community we have during Sabbath and Festival services. Our music reflects the many preferences and backgrounds of our members, with contemporary, folk, classical Reform or a capella 4-part music usually accompanying our worship at different services. Special services feature Friday Night Live, jazz and Israeli music.

Shabbat services usually begin at 7:30 p.m. from September through June, including a once-a-month evening Torah service. During the summer months, services begin at 7:30 p.m. on the first Friday night of the month and generally at 6:30 p.m. on the remaining Fridays.Times may vary due to special programming, so please consult the monthly Temple Bulletin or website calendar for times.

Shabbat morning services are offered once per month during the school year at 11 a.m., usually preceded by Adult Torah Study from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., unless a bar or bat mitzvah or other programming is scheduled. Saturday services are not held in the summer. Festival services vary, so please check the Temple Bulletin or website calendar.

PJ Shabbat, a service designed for students in first grade and younger in their pajamas, is offered about once per month during the school year on Friday at 6:30 p.m. See the calendar for specific dates. A kid-friendly Oneg Shabbat follows.

Please join us as we light the candles each Friday and welcome the Sabbath Bride. It’s a time for renewal and reflection, a chance to focus on the spiritual rather than daily concerns. We look forward to seeing you.

PJ Shabbat

Minimize

PJ Shabbat is offered once per month on Friday at 6:30 p.m. for little ones in first grade and younger. We’ll have a condensed service, singing, dancing, games and an Oneg appropriate for the children to reinforce the Sabbath experience. Lasting 30 to 45 minutes, the evening is a fun way for parents to introduce their children to the service and learning to enjoy Judaism. Children and adults are invited to wear their "jammies."

Most weeks, Chuck Replane will lead the service.

Please mark your calendars for PJ Shabbats on the following Friday evenings in 2011-2012: October 14, November 11, December 16 (new date and Hanukkah celebration), January 13, February 10, March 9, April 13 and May 11.

Friday Night Live

Minimize

Our spirited and popular Friday Night Live service returns on March 30, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. Combining klezmer, folk, Middle Eastern and Hebrew melodies that everyone can sing, FNL recaptures the spontaneity and delight of Jewish worship. Dance in the aisles or just tap your feet, but plan to be part of this refreshing worship experience led by Rabbi Cattapan.

Under the direction of Bob Nance and made possible by the Dr. Harry W. Salon Foundation, FNL offers an especially joyous way to celebrate Shabbat.

Ushers & Oneg Hosts

Minimize

You can be the recipient of a delicious braided challah for your Shabbat table by volunteering to greet congregants and distribute prayer books when services begin each week. All Shabbat ushers receive a gift certificate for a tasty loaf donated by Waynedale Bakery, 2610 Lower Huntington Road.

Your friendly smile and warmth play an important part in welcoming our extended congregational family to Shabbat services. It's a terrific family activity, a way to get involved, and an opportunity to meet new people. Ushers are needed 52 weeks a year. Please say “yes” when a Ritual Committee member calls asking you to usher or call the Temple office If you’d like to volunteer.

Oneg Shabbat hosts also are needed. At Achduth Vesholom, we’ve come to value this special time following services because it allows our members and guests to begin the Sabbath with an atmosphere of fellowship while unwinding from a busy week. We hope that congregants will take a turn providing refreshments or sponsoring an Oneg Shabbat so that we can maintain this beautiful tradition. Our summer receptions feature wine and challah, but during the rest of the year, we rely on the generosity of our members to serve as hosts. Please contact the Temple office at 744-4245 if you’d like to host an oneg in honor of a simcha, important event, or favorite person. It’s a great way to showcase a new recipe or share a favorite treat from the bakery.
